Spider-man: Far From Home Suit Drawing
The first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home has arrived, and while the highlights are the European setting and a brief glimpse of Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio, attention must also be paid to another reveal: Peter Parker's new suit.
Throughout Spider-Man's comic history, Peter Parker's wardrobe has been filled with alternate costumes. While there isn't a one-for-one reference for Far From Home's new look, the "Stealth Suit" seems to draw inspiration from Spider-Man Noir, the Peter Parker of Earth-90214. Aside from the omission of the hat and trenchcoat, the film's Stealth Suit carries over the goggles and color scheme to its bullet best.
In Noir's world, Spider-Man is a hero of the Great Depression, while his alter ego is an investigative reporter waging war against New York's criminal underworld. Noir quickly became a fan favorite and has shown up in media since then, most notably Into the Spider-Verse. Don't expect the creation of David Hine, Fabrice Sapolsky, and Carmine Di Giandomenico in the comics anytime soon, though; spoiler — he wound up kicking the bucket in last year's Spider-Geddon comic.
The Stealth Suit might be visually influenced by Noir, but its purpose in the film has roots in the prime Marvel universe. In Far From Home, Spider-Man swings over to London, a location is comic counterpart visited in 1971's Amazing Spider-Man #95. The book saw a heartbroken Peter heading to England to meet up with Gwen Stacy, a plan diverted by a crop of terrorists who pop up to kidnap an American delegate.
For more recent history, most will likely connect the globetrotting in the film to Dan Slott's 2016 Amazing Spider-Man: Worldwide run, wherein Peter traveled the globe as the CEO of Parker Industries and saved the day as Spider-Man, who was his "bodyguard."
While Peter's last two suits were gifts from Tony Stark, the Stealth Suit likely comes from Nick Fury, who appears to have survived the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Spider-Man and Fury worked together in the past, most notably in 2004's Secret War. In that story arc, Spidey and Fury (plus a handful of other heroes) headed to Latveria to covertly dispose of weapons tech planned to be sold to B-tier villains. Since what they were doing was technically illegal and unsanctioned, everyone wore dark stealth versions of their normal costumes. This wasn't even the first time Fury gifted Spider-Man a darker color-schemed costume — just ask Miles Morales.
In Secret War, Spider-Man and the other heroes wore stealth suits to avoid setting off an international controversy. In Far From Home, that logic likely still applies: After all, Peter himself says in the trailer that he's not exactly a globetrotting hero. Being decked out in all black makes it harder for anyone to connect him to America or SHIELD and keeps him from sticking out like a sore thumb. Expect a few new gadgets up his sleeve, too.
Thus far, every MCU film to feature Spider-Man has given him a new suit to swing around in. The Stealth/Noir suit is one of the most distinct, and we can't wait to see it in action when Spider-Man: Far From Home arrives in theaters on July 5.
